Modern Interior Design is Smooth and Polished
The modernist style of interior decor came from Scandinavia and Germany back in the 1930s. However it’s still a popular look these days for a lot of folks when it comes to home decor. Modern interior design ideas feature certain distinct elements that make it instantly identifiable. These involve accentuating shapes and profiles, using white and black tones, austere illumination, and plenty of chrome details. The end result portrays an elegant appearance in the midst of uncluttered spaces. It’s often a design choice for modern homes and lofts.
Seamless lines are made with smooth, gleaming surfaces, hence it’s imperative to sustain this characteristic throughout the total room. Flooring is normally light colored tile or wood, with a minimal amount of area rugs covering it. Precise positioning of these rugs is useful to create the impression of smaller areas within a large room. This is ideal for varying purposes such as dining or entertaining guests.
You will need to pick out furniture that’s simple yet vibrant, and all in the same hue. Each item must come across as if it was chosen with intent, not as a postscript. The larger items will need to be muted in color, however you can add colorful accents with pillows and lesser ornamental pieces. As a matter of fact, using unrelieved neutral shades will have your eyes traveling continually around the room seeking a break in the pattern. At least two vibrant colors are necessary to supply contrast to the neutrals and add depth to the space. Select fabrics in geometric motifs and steer clear of complex patterns. Animal prints, however, are an exception to this rule.
All the accessories in the space will need to feature chrome, including lighting fixtures, electrical plates and door handles. Be cautious with the use of chrome because it is intended as an accent only. However materials such as glass, metal and stone can be used more generously. These items impart a secondary texture to the area that complements rather than overwhelms the smoothness of the main pieces.
Big windows that let in plenty of natural light are a standard mark of the modernist look. Yet there is also plenty of supplementary illumination employed in the form of gallery lighting that attracts the eye to the central features in a room. Inadequate illumination will create a look that is daunting instead of angular.
Use your common sense when planning a living space in a modern look. It’s completely possible that you’ll end up designing a room that’s just remote and barren rather than smooth and chic. For instance, too much wide open area makes the function of the room ambiguous. Exposed beams and pipes are often highlighted in modern interior design, but these should be kept to a minimum if you don’t want your house to look like a warehouse. If they’re protruding into the living spaces, you’ve overdone it. And allowing junk to gather will destroy a perfectly fashioned arrangement and take away from the minimalist statement you’re attempting to make.
