How come cars always have 6 gears?
I know how they work but I can’t work out how that stops them from having more, in supercars wouldn’t it help? I’ve seen a couple of 7 gears on Top Gear before but why doesn’t anyone go higher, is it just impractical?
Some trucks I have driven have had 13 and 21 gears.
As most the cars tested on Top Gear are performance vehicles, that explains why you see mainly 6 speed cars.
May years ago, manual transmissions were commonly 3 speed. They then moved to 4 speed, and then 5 speed, with 5th gear being overdrive.
The 6 and 7 speed gearboxes allows a lower first gear (useful if you want to take off very quickly) and the use of a slightly taller diff ratio. The taller diff ratio will give a higher top speed.
In most 6 speeds, 5 and 6 would be overdrive, allowing the engine RPM to be greatly reduced when cruising at speed.
In the 7 speed boxes, the extra gear may be around the middle of the ratio, so that you can leave it in a gear for twisty corners, or have better acceleration out of corners.
