The historic market town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire has a long history in the northeastern part of England. It is also what the English call a spa town, and it lies along the banks of the River Nidd. The town itself — along with the region in general — attracts large numbers of tourists every year who are drawn to its historic past and its scenic natural beauty. It has a population of around 15,000 people.
Knaresborough’s past runs back through the Norman property tax survey held by William I (William the Conqueror). Known as the Domesday Book, and completed in 1086, it lists the town as Chanaresburg on its rolls. The most significant historical attraction is Knaresborough Castle, which itself dates from the Norman times of antiquity and seems to have been built around 1100. Sitting on a cliff that overlooks the River Nidd, it is open to the public for sightseeing.
For the next five-hundred or so years, the castle was an active part of the defense of the town below. It finally fell under siege to Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War, and was looted for its stone by townsfolk beginning around the year 1648. There are more than a few buildings within Knaresborough which are at least partly built of so-called ‘castle stone’.
There are several other notable sites of interest in and around the town, including a petrifying well that draws large numbers of tourists. There is also a significant cave dwelling which used to be a Middle Ages chapel. Lastly, Knaresborough is the site of the country’s oldest chemist shop, or pharmacy, first opened in 1720. Contemporary events held in town include the famous Knaresborough Bed Race, a large fun run and road race, and a yearly arts festival.
The non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire is the county in which Knaresborough resides. It is also the largest ceremonial county, in terms of land area, in England. It has a current population of about 1.1 million people. About 40 percent of the county is taken up by national parks. Both Knaresborough and North Yorkshire give the tourist plenty of sightseeing and other opportunities in which to enjoy a part of old England.
